Here is how we use some common National Registry terms:
| Certification: | Earning National Registry certification for the first time. If you’re a student, recent graduate, or have never been Nationally Registered at this level. |
| Recertification: | Maintaining your current National Registry certification by completing the requirements for your certification level before it expires. |
| Regain/Restore: | Returning to National Registry certification after your certification has lapsed. If you were previously Nationally Registered but are no longer certified. |
| Certification vs. Licensure | National Registry certification and state licensure are related, but they are not the same thing. The National Registry certifies that you have met national standards, while your state grants you the legal authority to practice. |
